A Place For Architects to Collaborate!

I was just curious what resources people are using or have found successful to find potential jobs. I have been using the AIA web site, Monster, Careerbuilder, online newpapers, and cold calling. I have had the most replies with cold calling and have toured a firm, had 1 interview, and dropped tons of resumes.

I know that this is a touchy market and would appreciate any ideas if you are willing to share.

I dislike cold calling and impressed that you have been successful at it. I have taken other approaches such as sending an "Introduction" email to me and my services. I have received a very favorable response to that approach. I have also been seaching each of these sites on a weekly basis. If the website has a job alert option, I sign up for that and get notified that same day.

For me, one of the reasons I joined this board was to figure out what other people are doing in regards to employment - is it social networking, portfolio designing, resume distribution, all of the above?

I am too new to this board to know the answer this question but would like to add that for me at this time I have been inviting friends/collegues I know who are (and who are not) working to coffee/lunch to learn what or how they are coping in these times.

Rex, the board just started 3 days ago so its new to all of us.

I think its a little bit of everything that you described, in the hope of making us all better for it. With the way the architecture market is right now, I think it will be a toll for all of us. For people like me with little experience, I am looking for hints, suggestions and any help I can find, just to get started. For the more experienced, they may use this as a tool to find new employees.

I think right now there will be quite a bit of lamentation over the market, and information passing to see where the market is recovering or falling.

Network, Network, Network! That is the only way I have gotten interviews.

Networking seems to be the most important! I am told by many firms that my resume/work is impressive-but they just can't afford the position at the time. On the other hand-anybody that I find-who has been recently hired-is because of who they know.

I have probably submitted cover letters and resumes through six different job search websites and to a dozen or more employers with little response. Is your best networking through some agency or through people you kinow or meet within the business?

Best source is definitely networking or who you know, I use monster.com, careerbuilder, to name a few.
I have had a few call backs but not many offers.

Terrific list of web sites. Thanks.

Thank you for the List - it may help. There has to be employment somewhere.

I have been to a few job search sites and I'm curious to see if anyone has figured out a way to filter the searches to only bring up architecture jobs (as in building) and not give me all the systems architects or computer something-or-others. I am not qualified or interested in these positions, so is there a way to have them stop coming up in my searches?

Forgi,

I know you can use the more search options on Monster. You can exclude terms like net and software and that will give you a refined search with mainly architecture (our definition) :-) jobs. I have yet to find out Careerbuilders search engine. If you are looking at government jobs use 0808 (YD0808 and GS0808 are architect grades) which will bring up mostly construction jobs.
